Mercedes-Benz will add a diesel-engine option to the freshened GLK crossover that debuts at next month's New York auto show.
The GLK gets midlife exterior updates, including new front headlamps and a sportier rear bumper.
The diesel-powered GLK250 BlueTEC 4MATIC with all-wheel drive arrives in early 2013 with a 190-hp, 2.1-liter inline-four-cylinder engine. All of Mercedes' larger crossovers and SUVs have diesel variants.
Mercedes has not disclosed estimated fuel economy ratings for the new diesel version. The additional engine will give the Mercedes GLK an advantage over its rivals, the Audi Q5 and BMW X3, which are not available with diesel engines in the United States.
The first new GLK variant to go on sale is the GLK350, which arrives this summer with a reworked V-6 engine that gets a boost in horsepower to 302 from 268.
An optional AMG styling package includes 20-inch wheels, front and rear skirts, an AMG grille, sportier daytime running lights and aluminum roof rails. AMG is Mercedes' high performance division.
Pricing for the updated GLK family has not been announced.
